CONVENOR

Prof Andrew Stevenson
Prof Andrew Stevenson
Colorectal Surgeon and Head of Surgery, St Vincent’s Private Hospital, QLD Australia

Professor Andrew Stevenson is a Senior Colorectal Surgeon, Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Queensland, past Head of the Colorectal Surgery department at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Honorary Associate of the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, past Chair of the ANZ Training Board in Colorectal Surgery and an Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Prof Stevenson is the principal investigator for several multi-centre trials on minimally invasive colorectal surgery (including ALaCaRT and the new trial of robotic v. laparoscopic colectomy - RoLaCaRT). He has also been a key member of multiple international consensus boards, including ventral rectopexy, taTME, ICG and complete mesocolic excision. Having published over 100 scientific articles and conducted more than 200 workshops and masterclasses on advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotics, both locally and internationally, Prof Stevenson remains closely involved in developing new minimally invasive techniques and has been one of the pioneers of robotic colorectal surgery in Australia, co-authoring the world’s first series of robotic pelvic exenteration.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The first session explores transitions in surgical practice, such as moving from laparoscopic to robotic techniques, the challenges faced by new surgeons, and how to navigate the learning curve or start a new program. It also delves into the strategic implementation of robotic surgery, its application in hernia and rectopexy procedures, and special considerations for splenic flexure mobilisation and emergency surgeries.

The second session addresses how experienced consultants can learn robotic surgery, and it covers specific techniques like da Vinci robotic right colectomy and anterior resection with natural orifice specimen extraction. Both sessions conclude with panel discussions and question periods, providing a comprehensive platform for surgeons to share experiences and insights.
